The ministry we are currently most engaged in now is establishing a mother church. We are now meeting in our home but are actively looking for larger facilities. In June of 2000, another small Japanese church joined with us to form one church. Their pastor Shuichi Tomiyoshi, has a very debilitating sickness that prevented him from assuming normal pastoral duties. He asked us about the possibility of uniting and after a time of prayer and counsel we did so. Since that time, the Lord has wonderfully blessed this ministry with growth both in people's lives and in numbers.
The name of our church is Belmont Church Okinawa. Belmont is the name of our sending church in Nashville, Tennessee. After long discussions and prayer everyone felt that Belmont would be a great name for our church here because of Japanese people's fondness of things unique and American.
Also. having been so blessed by God's grace through our home church in Nashville, everyone had a deep sense of kinship with the fellowship in Nashville and thought this would be one way of showing unity and appreciation. By the way, the actual pronunciation changes a bit when spoken in the Japanese tongue: Berumonto . Located in a village called Yomitan, we are in a rather rural setting compared to most of the other urban quarters of the island, yet very easily accessed from other areas.
We are currently involved in outreaches such as hospital visitation, working with a women's shelter, and also english classes and musical concerts. Our primary focus of ministry is on discipleship and family values, two of the most important needs right now in the Japanese Christian and non-Christian community.
