In human relationships we all know how important it is for us to accept each other as we are. Prejudice, bias and being judgmental lead to many of the personal and social problems we have today. Of course great care and wisdom are needed to ensure that we hold ourselves and others responsible for wrong behavior. Nevertheless, understanding and accepting each other for who we are is one of the most important pillars of a strong relationship and society. This principle must also be applied to our relationship with the God. God calls us to accept him as he is. In John 4:14, Jesus says that, gGod is Spirit, and they that worship him must worship him in Spirit and in truth.h First this is telling us that God is invisible. This is an important truth that we must grasp with great seriousness for it helps us to understand why faith is such an important part of our relationship with God. God is Spirit, that is, he is not animate material. As such he cannot be seen by natural eyes. This is what he is by nature. This is what he is and this is who he is. If we are to have a healthy and strong relationship with God, we must accept him on these terms. Next, it says that we must worship him this way. God accepts us as we are; human, frail limited beings. We must accept and appreciate him for who he isf; spirit, divine, and eternal. This is why idolatry is such a terrible sin. Idolatry is the attempt to make a visible image of God for the sake of seeing it as God. It is a false image. In fact there is no image that can capture the true and living God. W e are commanded time and time again throughout the bible to walk by faith, not by sight. This is because we are to walk with a God who wants us to truly know him for who he is. When we do this we are able to gain the greatest benefit of our relationship with him, because it truly then is a relationship built upon trust in him, and not in simply what our eyes see. When we accept and walk with God for who he is we are able to learn not to live so much by what we see with our eyes, but by the truths that God tells us to live by. In this way God is able to help us deal with problems and struggles we face, because even though we may not physically see the answers and the way immediately we know that he is with us and working to guide us through. |
